YouTube and the NBA

i was reading over my team's blogs looking for something to comment on and came across Patrick's blog posting about an article he read that says that the NBA has paired with YouTube in a promotion effort to try and get fans to post clips of themselves trying various basketball tricks nad the like. i think, due to YouTube's popularity, this is a great idea for the NBA and might be something the NHL should consider doing as well. in my BUAD 479 class, we had to analyze a case on the NHL and discuss how to better market the league to try to regain some of the following that it had in the mid-90s. if they were to put videos of amazing tricks done by the fans on YouTube and many people were to see them, then an average sports fan might start to become interested in the sport and maybe even develop into a fan, something the NHL needs much more of after looking at the case.

Local TV: Whats On(line)?

i read this interesting article from ClickZ that draws attention to the importance of local news stations and the use of their websites. obviously advertisements run on the TV during the local news but this article sheds light on the fact that there is proof that ads on these station's websites are very effective. not only do these sites give you the information that you would find on the local braodcast but they also offer career pages, horoscopes, and lists of community events. this is also a very good way to segment the market geographically as pretty much all the sites readers are from the area in which the station serves.

Blog Search

i used the Google blog search engine and decided to subscribe to the term 'poker' as it is a game i enjoy playing. anyone else interested in playing poker during the week and weekends, local bars hold poker tournaments that cost nothing to you (just show up and sign up) play for fun and the top 2 placers win a prize. i believe its a gift certificate to the bar for second and $100 cash to the winner. its a good time and you dont have to be great at poker to do well. i won one on sunday a week ago or so at Timothy's in Newark (on Paper Mill Rd) and i would say i am an average player. they usually occur at a few other local bars at 8pm, i think, during the week and 1pm on the weekends.

Wikipedia Edit

I made another Wikipedia edit today on the page about my high school, Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. Its a public high school located in my home town of Acton, Massachusetts and in the article i added that the football team had won a state record 52 consecutive games, most of which occurred while i was there. on another note thats somewhat related, my freshman year here at Delaware, 2003-2004, was a year in which my high school football team won the state 'super bowl', the Delaware football team won the D1-AA national championship, and the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl. Between the 3 teams that year, their combined record was 41-3, it was a pretty good season for all 3 teams and kind of cool to win the championship on all levels.

Personalization and Cookies

I went to the store the other day looking for a movie that i thought was out on DVD but i couldn't find it so when i got home i went onto Amazon to see if actually was out on DVD, which it was. Anyways i couldn't help but notice some of the personalization and cookie issues we discussed recently in class. Not only did i find the movie i was looking for, but also Amazon lets you know what other products people bought that also bought the movie i was looking for, and even other products that people eventually bought after only just viewing the movie page. The ability to make these kinds of things available to consumers on the web is very powerful, and i kind of see it as impulse buys on the internet, you didnt go to the site with the intention of purchasing something related to what you bought, but it catches your eye and you buy it too.

Survey Monkey

The last lecture briefly covered research on the internet, including Survey Monkey as an online survey tool. Interestingly, in my ENGL312 class, i am involved in a service learning project through the Center for Disabilities Studies (CDS) in which our task is to market an online survey created with Survey Monkey to families with children with disabilities. The survey looks into the possibilities of starting some after school and summer programs for these children. We have to look into the problem of creating awareness of this survey and possibly access to it for those families that don't have access to the internet. Another class member, Sharon, is also in my group and I see that she beat me to posting about it, but we both met with the contact person at the CDS and are starting to think about ways to reach these families and get as many of them to respond to the survey as possible. It will be a good experience working with this survey and see how the marketing field is changing right before our eyes.

ClickZ atricle post

I read an article on ClickZ tonight that detailed a series of shows online that are backed by Michael Eisner, the former head of Disney. It consists of 80 shows that each run 90 seconds, but the marketing aspect of the show is that viewers will be able to purchase any of the products used in the show through another interrelated website. This is just one example of where the marketing field is headed and shows how the use of the internet is redefining marketing. One such company whose products appear on the shows are those of the very popular Victoria's Secret.

Wikipedia edit

i made my first Wikipedia edit today, a little late but better late than never right? anyways i added to the article on George Washington that he only won 3 of his 9 battles that he fought in from the American Revolution. i learned this from watching the HBO comedy special done by Robert Wuhl called 'Assume the Position'. i recommend it to everyone who has HBO or some other means of watching it. its pretty funny, interesting, and really has nothing to do with what you might think from reading the title.
